The International Coastal Cleanup effort will include, for the second year in a row, an underwater component in Key Biscayne. Coach Ignacio "Iggy" Larrea and select members of the strongest swimmers of Team Key Aquatics will be supported by parents, lifeguards and kayaks donated by Crandon Park Visitor and Nature Center as they clean up marine debris at Crandon Park. Last year, Team Key Aquatics picked up, amongst an assorted array of trash, almost 300 beer and soda cans from an underwater area just a few feet from the coast. A diverse and surprising range of findings, including a couple of octopi inside glass bottles and even a rug, were pulled from the ocean floor. The octopi were return to their habitat unharmed after they were examined by their curious handlers.
This year the team will have two groups, one which will remain in shallow waters to pick up any underwater debris found there and the strongest swimmers will be accompanied by kayaks to venture into deeper areas to focus their cleanup efforts there. They will be accompanied by adults and supported by kayaks and lifeguards. We anticipate to have a great day in the ocean!
